What's the difference between a crinoline and a hoop skirt?
While the terms "crinoline" and "hoop skirt" are often used interchangeably in modern times, they originally had distinct meanings. A crinoline was initially a petticoat made from a stiff fabric blend of horsehair and cotton or linen. As fashion evolved, the design of the crinoline changed to include hoops or cages, giving birth to what we now commonly refer to as the "hoop skirt." In essence, all hoop skirts are crinolines, but not all crinolines (especially the early versions) are hoop skirts!
